- Mise-en-scene means the components that are in a scene. There are five things that are included in the mise-en-scene. These are:
- Actors - If the wrong person is cast for the part then the audience may not feel as much sympathy for the victim and may not be scared of the villain. For example, a blonde petite female would be ideal to cast as a victim because they are not seen as a strong character.
- Costumes - The costumes can represent many ideas. Either a person's wealth, social status, job or personality.
- Location - A typical horror film would be based in an isolated area. For example, a house in the middle of nowhere. Choosing the right location will give your audience an insight into how the film will make them feel whether it's alone or frightened.
- Positioning - The positioning of props and actors can say a lot about the situation. It can be used to show the relationship between two characters. If they were further apart it would suggest that they're not friends and if thy closer together, it suggests they're allies.
- Props - The props that are included in a scene would need to compliment the era and the genre of the film. For example, a mobile phone would be an extremely inappropriate prop to use in the film.
