Who would be the audience of your media product?
I chose to test our product and get feedback from people in the age category we were aiming for which is 15. This is because most horror films are aimed at teenagers aged 15 as an 18 rated film has a more narrow audience.

Starter:
Harry, River and Georgia said they preferred the Trinity Productions moving image logo as it carries more tension and seems more adapted to the horror genre. We wanted this reaction as we wanted the clip to look simple and match the genre of our film. This is needed in a production company logo as they specialise in specific genres. Sam believed that Terrestrial Reach films was the better logo as it was dark and ominous. This is the reaction we wanted as distribution companies are supposed to represent power and the idea of the product being shared around the world. Main: The iconic parts of our OTS were both mentioned in the evaluation. the book scene was an interesting part of our OTS and we added it throughout to tie together the video and establish continuity. The other influential part of our OTS was the singing of the rhyme in the background. It suited the concept of our product and gave a better understanding of the Sandman plot, without giving it away completely. It was said to build tension and this was the purpose we envisioned. Dessert: The title of "My Soul To Take" hinted at the plot and this was picked up on by our audience. It represented the idea of the eyes being taken later in the film and this was our main title so we wanted it to represent ideas from the plot. However, we didn't expect it to work so well but this group managed to pick up on specific details and relate it back to the story. At first, every title had this format but it ruined the continuity of the OTS so we decided to change the titles in between to red simple, text. Our target group said this complimented our OTS and this is what we wanted to achieve. |
How did you attract/address your audience?
The use of the book attracts a wide range of our 15-25 target audience as many films use books as a central part to their plot, such as, The Cabin in the Woods (2012) and The Babadook (2014). We developed the use of storybooks and we felt it would compliment our story line of the Sandman which is based on our research where we found a nursery rhyme and old legend.

We wanted to show our victim in a vulnerable situation in bed at home as it would apply more tension to the scene and our audience would start to be concerned for his safety. This is because, for most people, their rooms and their home is the safest place to be so they can relate to the character and showing a contamination of that safety brings more worry to the audience. Examples of this are:

Our first audience member was a boy aged 15 who said he didn't find horror films scary. Despite this, he said he liked that the audience were dropped into a scene with little information. This makes the audience drawn to the situation and want to continue watching and find out what the outcome is.
Our second audience member was a 16 year old girl who found all horror films scary and said she was a jumpy person. While watching our OTS you can see that she looks noticeably uncomfortable, showing that she found it scary. She said that she liked how the false scare at the end brought a lot of tension as the audience would anticipate there being a scare or "jump". Due to our findings, we found that our film idea would be best suited for females as they would find it scarier and be made to feel more uncomfortable. |
